Nickel and Dimed to Death by Verizon

ATT vs Verizon

AT&T is a bargain compared to Verizon.

My AT&T contract comes up for renewal later this year and I’ll just say it. It’s been a long 2 years.

I hate AT&T. Dropped calls, no coverage, pitiable customer service – all hallmarks of my tenure with the company. Consequently, I’ve been salivating about a transfer to Verizon. I dream of their cellular army following me around San Diego, led by that cute geeky guy. Can you hear me now? I can! I can!

Then my brother, a former Verizon customer and current curmudgeon, burst my cellular fantasy bubble.

“Verizon nickel and dimes you for every service that is available for free from other providers,” he says.

He’s right.

    Visual Voice Mail – AT&T $0/mo; Verizon $2.99/mo
    VZ Navigator (GPS software) – AT&T $0/mo; Verizon $9.95/mo
Rollover minutes – AT&T included; Verizon $don’t even think about it

Verizon even charges you to use free apps, such as Loopt. To make matters worse, PC World recently reported on Verizon’s future plans to make their own app store the primary destination for future droid phones.

By comparison, AT&T offers the best overall deal. Even when AT&T does charge for an app, it’s normally a one-time fee, such as for TomTom. The company’s apparent largesse stems primarily from its relationship with the iPhone. Those users represent a huge portion of income and it’s in AT&T’s best interest to keep them happy.

And so, come June, I’ll bitch, moan, complain, and sell my soul to AT&T for another 2 years. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
