Just Hold It
Posted on Apr 12 by Kelly JohnsonI’ve been reading a lot of what other bloggers have been saying about the iPad.It doesn’t support Flash. Okay. It doesn’t have a camera. Nope. There’s no HDMI out. That’s true. The name sucks. Yes, but only because we’re a nation of adolescents.
I have just one question for all these naysayers.
Have you held it?
My brother, ever the early adopter, came over a few days ago to show off his new iPad. He’s single and can afford every new toy. I’m married to an M.D. with about $250,000 in student loans. I buy my toys off the clearance rack. Anyway, he brings it over and I pull out my best Marlene Dietrich devil-may-care tude, which lasts until the exact moment he places it in my hands and drool begins seeping from the corner of my lips.
Sorry Marlene, but the iPad is too effin cool!
It’s light, unbelievably light. And lightening fast. I’ve never surfed the net faster on any other device. It may just be my Apple-colored glasses, but it also seemed as though every site just looked better on the iPad. Colors are crisper, text sharper and I loved the way the wind blew through my hair. Okay, I made up that last part but believe me, once you’ve used the Marvel Comics app, you may never step into a comic book store again. Spidey never looked so good. I went to Netflix and watched a few minutes of a Buffy episode. Amazing! And again, super fast load time. Pinch in or out to change the aspect ratio and the orientation handles like the iPhone.
I’m not big on eBooks, but the bookshelf made me smile and the one ebook included, Winnie the Pooh, was easy to read and delightfully illustrated. Turning the pages with my index finger gave me the feeling of having a paper book in my hand. You can read one or two pages at a time, depending on the orientation.
Just to prove it wasn’t a total love fest, I do have two complaints. One, magazine publishers need to offer annual subscription deals to iPad owners. My brother laughed at Men’s Health special offer, $5.99 – for one issue. Two, the sound wasn’t great, okay, but not great. That’s definitely an area for improvement. But as for the other complaints, mere white noise.
